DIY Green Man Beard Oil Recipe

Green Man Beard Oil

Chances are, you have at least one gloriously bearded man in your life.  Perhaps you are even a gloriously bearded man yourself!  As someone with a partner sporting a beard I have to tell you that despite the beard’s epic awesomeness, it can also be a bit scratchy and prickly if I get too close.  The partner and I have been considering coming up with a DIY beard conditioning oil for a while to see if that would help and we finally got to it earlier this week.

Green Man Beard Oil Ingredients
The candle is optional. 😉

The modern “lumbersexual” guy (yes y’all, that’s a thing) accepts the fact that if he wants to get close to other people with the beardy beard beard, he needs to condition it regularly to keep it soft and lustrous rather than coarse and rough.  Of course you could simply massage in a daily dose of your oil of choice (coconut, almond and jojoba are all good for this purpose) if you’re a no-frills kinda guy.

Adding Almond Oil
Start by adding carrier oil to dropper bottle.

On the other hand, it won’t hurt to spice it up with essential oils so that your beard is not only soft, shiny and well-groomed, but also lightly perfumed with an intoxicating scent that will draw people in.  Haha, okay, that’s an exaggeration (can you tell I worked in marketing in a past life?) but it will sure smell good to anyone with beard-nuzzling privileges.  Adding a pleasantly scented essential oil blend is just icing on the silky beard cake!  It’s easy to make, only takes a few ingredients, and a little goes a long way.

beard oil add vanilla extract
A hint of vanilla adds a sweet warm undertone.

Moses, my very own gloriously bearded man, not only took the pictures for this project, but also agreed to be my test rat and tried out all 4 of the crazy concoctions that I came up with in looking for the perfect scent.  I used this DIY Beard Oil Tutorial to study up a bit before I started experimenting.  I encourage you to play around with different essential oil blends as all of the scents we came up with were nice.  Our favorite of the four is this Green Man Beard Oil recipe, formulated to smell spicy and woody, with a subtly sweet warm vanilla undertone.

beard oil add clove
Clove essential oil spices it up a little.

This is Moses’s first time using any sort of beard conditioner and we plan to post before and after shots once he’s used the beard oil for a while, assuming there is a visual difference with long term use.  He’s about a week in right now and it already feels softer and the scent is really nice without being overpowering.  You can only smell it if you get close to the beard, which is perfect.  Instructions for use are below the recipe.

All done and ready to work its magic!

Green Man Beard Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

  • approximately 2 tbsp almond or jojoba oil
  • 4 drops vanilla extract
  • 10 drops texas cedarwood essential oil
  • 2 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops clove essential oil
  • 1 drop orange essential oil

Method:

Add 1.5 tbsp of almond or jojoba oil to a 1 oz capacity dropper bottle.  New dropper bottles are very inexpensive, however we always save the dropper bottles leftover from supplements and simply cleaned them thoroughly to reuse for this project.  Next add the 4 drops of vanilla, then all of the essential oils.  Fill bottle to top with a little more of the almond or jojoba oil, then cap the bottle and shake vigorously for a minute or so to thoroughly distribute the ingredients.  Your very own Green Man Beard Oil is ready for use!

Directions for Use:

Drop 3-6 drops of beard oil directly onto clean beard and/or mustache and comb through to distribute evenly.  Use once or twice a day to condition and soften your facial hair.
